Cheap gear.

.
I don’t really dwell on gear. I got what I need, I know how to use it, and that’s it for me. However, today I have been reminded of it’s importance (sic).
.
.
For a reason that is not relevant here, I switched lenses, from my usual canon 35mm f1.4 L to a lower quality canon 28mm f1.8. I knew it wouldn’t give me the same detail and colour etc, but it’s worse than I remembered it (haven’t used it in a very long time).

Seeing the results made me think a bit. Why am I so attached to the amount of detail in the image? Is that really so important to my photography? I would hate to think all there is to my images is just the sensual pleasure of a crisp image… Hopefully there is more. I seem to need that detail though. Literally, the clarity of vision has to translate into an accurate rendition (I’m not confusing the image with the real thing, no worries).

People may not see that much difference. The above images are alright technically – no serious problems, it’s not a blurry mass of pixels by any means. I can see it though, and it makes me itch. It’s not what I want. Got spoiled by possibilities of modern lenses I guess. It’s a bit like an addiction, I admit. And it’s hard to settle for an imitation (pun fully intended).
