daily shooting – distance matters

.
Today the selected images frame my day – the bus was shot in the very morning, the hand on my way home. very different feel to both, completely different light, subjects, but most importantly, distance.

The bus just stopped, so I had about a minute to shoot – plenty of time to compose and grab several frames. this is the only one that showed so much of the total scene – including the bit of the sky. In the other ones i came closer and focused on the bald gentleman in the centre, with the two people framing him. Surprisingly, the more distant point of view worked better – the composition is a bit messier, a bit more real. I often find I have a tendency to overcompose things. There is no postoproduction at all in this jpg, straight from the camera. Well done me.

The hand close up takes it strength from me standing next to the gentleman and quickly shooting two frames, composing on the fly. Sometimes I honestly don’t know how I get away with those things, afterall my 7D with the 35mm 1.4 is a massive combo. I guess I’m just really fast now. I’ve been captivated by the little plaster on the gentleman’s thumb, and when he turned the page and we got the fake smile next to his strong hand, I snapped two frames, just to be sure I got it.

A big scene, with dramatic light, shadow, vibrant red, and that oh-so-cool condensation on the windows, and a tiny little detail – a plaster on an injured finger. the right distance was crucial. did I get it right? I hope so.
