Make up for it.

The effort is obviously visible – clenched fists, twisted face, red cheeks (it’s quite cold, winter jackets everywhere), tense body. Something has happened as well – there is blood on one of the hands, clothing
is torn. A fall, maybe. The woman keeps on running though. Something is pushing her forward.

A couple stands still in an embrace – faces hidden, she seems to need consolation. Something has happened. No obvious traces here. Just silent tension. They were like that for quite a while. Long enough for me to get the composition I wanted, and move away, leaving them still there. Something was keeping them standing.

All photography is exploitative, you just have to be so good to make up for it – I’m quoting Richard Billingham here, from memory, so you have to excuse any mistakes. I fully agree, am aware, and I try to make up for it.
