Project: life.

.
The debate about ‘the project approach’ vs ‘life approach’ in photography seems to come back again and again. I think I just read something again on the LVP magazine just few days back. No wonder, as it is a crucial matter.

As you probably noticed, I practise the ‘daily life integration’ side of things. Here’s why I chose to go down that way, and what I’ve seen on it so far.

The challenge is to capture life as it unfolds and try to see the mundane anew. Life is mostly boring for most of us, it would seem. At least if you do not really pay attention. Once you start, there is no way back. Everything has potential. Fetishisation of reality? Hell yeah. Image junkie? Of course. The prize is great, a new way of living, seeing, experiencing. Understanding? Maybe, maybe not, I’m no philosopher, nor am I looking for answers to great secrets.

The threat is also great. To observe, you need to step back. Step back from your own life? Yep. Tricky. Bordering on schizophrenia when you think about it deeply enough. Worth it? Hell yeah.

Compare that to the ‘project approach’. The ten last people of the Tribe That Sleeps For Ten Months A Year. Give me a break. That is quasi-journalism. What it is I hear you say? That the first approach is a romantic-teenager-quasi-dairy? Can be. It’s not easy for sure, and can end up as a disaster in a heartbeat.

Maybe I’m a bit harsh on the ‘project’ guys. Maybe I have seen things from that region that did wow me. I guess it’s just not me. Its personal after all, Mr. Scientist with a camera.
